Infernal Pact

GLOG Class: SWORD SEEKER

SWORDSEEKER

HD / Damage Die: 1d8

Starting HP: 1d8+4

Level 1: Swordmilk, Swordmunch

Level 2: Swordflex, Swordportal

Level 3: Swordsquint, Swordsmash

Level 4: Swordnipotence

Swordmilk: You’re part of an ancient society of warriors that knows how to harness the arcane power of swords. You can distill the essence of any sword into a dose of Swordmilk (2 uses for LARGE or larger swords). When you or another Swordseeker drinks Swordmilk, you regain HP every round equal to your level for 10 rounds.

[Designer's note: LARGE objects are just objects that take 2 slots in my hack.]

Swordmunch: You start play with a LARGE sword referred to as “your sword” in class features. Give it a unique name. Your sword is a special sword and can eat other swords (you can make other swords eat other swords too to increase their size, they’re just not special). You deal additional damage with your sword equal to the amount of inventory slots it takes up past the first slot (so your starting sword deals +1 damage). Your sword grows 1 inventory slot every time it eats an amount of swords equal to its existing size. Swords smaller than half your sword’s size (rounded down) don’t count for this ability. If you use this ability on a magic sword, your sword gains any unique ability it possessed. Everytime your sword grows an inventory slot, give it a descriptive title like "X the Pugnacious" or "Ravenous X."

Swordflex: Your sword can eat a tool and gain its power. You can feed a hand-tool or 2h-tool to your sword to allow your sword to act as that tool from that point on.

Swordportal: You can walk through a sword to appear next to any other sword in sight (both swords must be in sight when you use this ability, you can’t bring the origin sword with you).

Swordsquint: If you close your eyes most of the way and keep your mind open, all weapons are swords. You can treat any weapon as if it were a sword, including hand-tools and 2h-tools.

Swordsmash: You can destroy any inanimate object smaller than your sword by succeeding at a STR check and spending 1 minute at the task. Especially durable objects like adamantine doors or iron golems deal damage back to your sword, causing it to reduce in size.

[Designer's note: normal-sized doors are roughly 6 slots, iron golems are 12, a human-sized object is 4, season as desired.]

Swordnipotence: You can use your sword to deal damage to spells and metaphysical aspects. You can attack magical effects, emotions and spirits the same way you could attack any other creature. They might have more HP than normal.

SWORD SEEKER is my hack's attempt at a fighter-style class. All my classes tend to produce characters slightly above the power level of a "normal" GLOG character and SWORD SEEKER is no exception. I designed the class primarily as a reference to shonen protagonists.

How they behave in play is much as you'd expect. The Swordmunch ability causes SWORD SEEKER characters to become very single-minded, seeking other swords out at cost to basically everything else, including XP in some cases. This causes them to enter battle with other sword users at zero hesitation, forgo carrying treasure or armor in order to carry their massive sword, and oftentimes get stuck trying to think of how they can transport their massive sword through the dungeon. Swordmilk ensures they probably won't die before they can munch at least one sword.

Their downfall is that while they are pretty good at combat, that's all they're good for. Swordflex allows them to keep a little utility as their inventory just becomes a single entry, allowing them to somehow use their sword as a fishing pole, tinderbox, rake, etc. This is really the only utility they get from their class though, unless you count "being a great distraction" as a utility. Their single-minded focus also leads to them wanting to engage in combat often, much like their reference material.

I've had 2 players play SWORD SEEKERS at my table, and both burned bright and short. Their characters didn't last longer than 3 or 4 sessions before their hubris caused them to pick a fight with something too large and they got smushed. They both had a blast doing it though, and their characters very quickly became larger than life.
