There's Always Money in the River Fort

Summer 68, 6023

Party heads back to the River Fort, hoping to finally clear the place so it can be used as an Outpost.

Summer 69, 6023

Party arrives at the lower entrance at river level, heads up to the courtyard and from there heads north into the mill room. They continued onwards into the back rooms, finding 3 long term grain storage rooms and a few remaining muskipedes lurking.

The PCs head back from the courtyard into the back offices behind the dining hall, getting back to a locked door they left last time. Eclair breaks her lockpicks opening the door but they're able to force it open the rest of the way. Inside, they find some battle plans indicating an attack on Circlebrook and Skybreaker Stronghold on Autumn 1 (roughly 30 days from now) and a trapped payroll chest. They continue exploring into the nearby barracks and Phil finds a masterwork electrum sword of duergar make.

The party finishes mapping the outpost, leaving just the stairs that lead into the Underworld. They drop off their loot in Flamagio's riverboat and get ready for another trip down into the dark.

Cold As Ice

The party heads down the stairs into the Underworld, spending about an hour on the stairs. They come to a T intersection, one side leading to the bottom of a massive waterfall and the other continuing into the dark. The party decides to investigate the waterfall.

What they see is an icy pool at the bottom of a several hundred foot waterfall with several stepping stones leading right through the falls into a tunnel beyond. The crashing water is parted by a spike of ice protruding from the wall above the tunnel. The party experimentally tries to jump across the stones only to discover that stepping on the penultimate stone underneath the falls causes the ice spike to retract and the water above to crash down onto you (Wicknod barely survives with his life). Phil casts Icicle Spears to form some ice spikes to block the water coming out of the surface of the pool and the party crosses.

They come to a spiral stair of ice extending upwards and downwards, mirroring the shape of the waterfall and a hallway leading to a room adjacent to the waterfall room. The party checks the hallway first and finds a magic circle with a suspended ring of ice hanging in midair. Vincent grabs the ring after some prompting from the spirit in his ice bracelet and almost immediately has his memory overwritten by the spirit in the ring, who appears to be related somehow to the spirit in the ice bracelet.

The party continues carefully up the ice stairs, finding an ice bridge at the very top leading to a suspended icy workshop room. There's a pile of ice roughly golem-shaped on the bridge with a human heart still beating in the pile of icy rubble. Wicknod grabs the heart and pockets it while the rest of the party approach the doors to the workshop.

Vincent knocks on the door and greets the person on the other side, apparently an ice magus named Rumalto. Through discussion it becomes apparent that Rumalto doesn't want to discuss much of anything who isn't a wizard like he is, though he's very interested to hear about this Flamagio fellow that Vincent mentioned. Rumalto offers to free Flamagio (and just Flamagio) from the padlock prison he's stuck in for the cost of a magic Tome and a favor to be named later from Flamagio. The party discusses this price for a while but eventually declines due to "[Rumalto]'s just got bad vibes, man." They head back down the stairs and back up to the River Fort.

The party decides that they'd like to establish the River Fort as an Outpost. They figure the Purple Heron goblins would probably be happy to have a new place to live after their village in the Puddlegrass was recently destroyed, so they send an emissary to Palomo's sawmill to offer it to them. Vincent retires to governorship of the manor along with the Purple Heron goblins, renaming the River Fort to Fort Venigni.
